Rebirth of New Orleans Tour Details

If you want a complete look at New Orleans and its enduring spirit that has helped rebuild from disaster and overcome the odds, you won’t find a better Katrina tour experience. Aboard our private tour vehicle, you’ll pass by areas affected by one of America’s worst disasters and get a fuller picture of how this city first came to be, its connection to the nation’s disappearing coastal wetlands, and how extreme weather events are handled today.

The effects of Hurricane Katrina are still being felt today in New Orleans. Starting in the French Quarter, the oldest neighborhood in the city and home to the infamous Bourbon Street, we’ll first explore the decision behind the city’s settlement in such a precarious location along the Mississippi River.

Popularized by the HBO series of the same name, the Tremé neighborhood received heavy damage during the 2005 storm. On our private tour, you’ll learn about its recovery efforts and its history as a haven for music prior to Katrina, among its more famous local venues being the site of Ernie K-Doe’s Mother-in-Law Lounge.

We’ll drive past an actual levee that “breached” as a result of Hurricane Katrina and see the resulting devastation that displaced hundreds of thousands of U.S. residents.

And, of course, we can’t speak of Katrina without touring the Lower 9th Ward, where you’ll not only demystify the true events leading up to and after the catastrophic surge here but also the stories of the ward’s resilient residents. You also might be surprised to hear this neighborhood has been home to such celebrities as Fats Domino, Magic Johnson, and several others.

After a day exploring our beautiful city and hearing a local tour guide’s perspective on its past, present, and future, you’ll have a profound appreciation for New Orleans and its persevering people. We’re proud to mention that this guided New Orleans tour donates a portion of your ticket purchase to Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana, whose mission is to unite people in action to achieve a thriving, sustainable Louisiana for all.

Highlights

French Quarter

Your food tour will take place in the charming French Quarter, one of NOLA’s most historic neighborhoods, filled with excellent restaurants, bars, and a mix of beautiful architectural styles. We’ll be visiting businesses who have long enjoyed a reputation for some of the best gumbo you’ll have in the city!

Jackson Square

Known as the location where Louisiana was officially recognized as a U.S. territory, Jackson Square features an equestrian statue of President Andrew Jackson and is ringed by many famous New Orleans institutions including Cafe du Monde and the Pontalba Buildings.

St. Louis Cathedral

On this New Orleans walking and food tasting tour, you’ll be passing by the St. Louis Cathedral, the oldest cathedral in continuous use in the United States and known as the iconic, triple-steepled backdrop to Jackson Square.

Cabildo

Formerly home to the Spanish municipal government before the Louisiana Purchase, this neighbor to St. Louis Cathedral can be seen from the tour’s starting point in Jackson Square.

The Presbytere

A neighbor to the iconic St. Louis Cathedral, this is one of the nation’s best examples of formal colonial Spanish architecture. We’ll see this beautiful building from the tour’s starting point in Jackson Square, before heading into the French Quarter.

Pontalba Buildings

On your New Orleans walking tour, you’ll be sure to spot the wrought iron–wrapped balconies that have long been associated with the elegant architecture found in New Orleans and affixed to these handsome brick buildings built between 1849 and 1851.

Community Impact

This tour aims to educate on the impact of natural disasters and how a city’s people have collectively worked to rebuild their communities.

Included in your tour ticket price is a donation to the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to unite people in action to achieve a thriving, sustainable Louisiana coast for all.

The narrative of this experience features stories of cultures and people often underrepresented or even misrepresented in history, including the displacement of those of various ethnicities, ages, and backgrounds.

This tour focuses on “supporting local”, with the potential to visit local businesses and which is vital to positively impacting the New Orleans community and its economy
