Private Highline & Chelsea Market Walking Tour Details

Tour two of New York’s trendiest west-side neighborhoods packed with eclectic eateries, fabulous architectural gems, and an unexpectedly peaceful oasis suspended above the busy city streets!

With your local, savvy NYC tour guide, you’ll ascend to walk along the Chelsea neighboorhood’s portion of the 1.45-mile-long High Line, an elevated greenway built on a former railroad track. You’ll learn about the history of this impressive undertaking as you take in views of the Hudson River and its unusual artificial park known as Little Island.

You’ll also be able to see the public square of Hudson Yards and its collection of striking and gravity-defying buildings.

Once we’ve worked up an appetite after our short walk, we’ll head to world-famous Chelsea Market. During your Chelsea Market tour segment, you’ll have the opportunity to indulge your sweet tooth with the market’s many desserts or grab a slice of authentic New York–style pizza. Your guide will be happy to recommend their favorite eateries, offering excellent Asian and Middle Eastern dishes, artisanal bread and baked goods, Mexican- and Japanese-inspired street eats, and more!

Your tour guide will fill you in on the market’s history from humble beginnings to the renowned food hall it’s become today.

We’ll finish up our New York City walking tour in the adjacent Meatpacking District, another historically industrial neighborhood that is now one of the most desirable places to live and work in the city. You may be surprised to learn the more gritty former lives of the historic buildings and spaces here and weigh in on the city’s gentrification to today’s luxury apartments and high-end businesses.

From here, you’re in the perfect place to continue exploring either neighborhood, continue your foodie adventure back at the market, or end your day with sunset views along the High Line.

High Line

You’ll walk a portion of this elevated former railway, restored and developed as a beautiful public park complete with native plantings and beautiful river and city skyline views. Our High Line tour promotes the repurposing of historic and significant structures, the reduction of construction waste, and the importance of green urban spaces and also therefore the mission of the Friends of The High Line organization.

You’ll have plenty of time to explore the neighborhood of Chelsea with your guide, who will introduce you to the area’s best shops and restaurants. Home to local businesses and the many eateries housed in historic Chelsea Market, you’ll help us support our NYC economy and reduce our carbon footprint just by using your two legs to get around!

Chelsea Market

Your New York City walking tour includes a stop at this historic food hall where fresh, local, and immigrant foods are the main features of our neighborhood walk. Enjoy freshly baked breads, artisanal cheeses, organic wines, and even a slice of genuine New York–style pizza, and more!

Meatpacking District

We’ll be walking around this trendy neighborhood that was once home to warehouses, slaughter houses, and other brick buildings dating back to the area’s industrial period. Your tour guide will provide an overview of the district’s history and its struggle to preserve it in the face of gentrification.

The Shops & Restaurants at Hudson Yards

From the High Line, you’ll be able to see the public space known as the Hudson Yards, an upscale, multi-story indoor shopping mall filled with stores and restaurants.

Edge NYC

Among the many marvels of New York’s architecture collection, the Edge seems to defy gravity with its 100-story-high observation deck jutting out far above the Hudson Yards.

The Vessel

This 16-story honeycomb-like structure is one of the architectural delights of the Hudson Yards and which we can view from atop the High Line.

Little Island

As we take in city skyline views on our High Line tour, you’ll also be able to look east towards the Hudson River, where the unique tulip-like concrete structures hold up the park known as Little Island. As with the High Line, the project took clever engineering and a long process involving native plantings.

Community Impact

Our tour guides encourage eating local, helping to reduce our impact on the environment and supporting local communities

Our tours strive to include businesses that support and employ refugees.

Our tour narrative includes a focus on the environment and community organizations, including Friends of The High Line, which came together as a small collective to transform a neighborhood from abandoned to revitalized.

We hope to inspire and educate with our inclusion of repurposed buildings and spaces, which can help preserve history and potentially reduce waste.

Highlights Tour

Explore an elevated green space in the heart of New York City and a global food hall on this 2-3–hour walking tour. Your Highlights experience includes a stroll along the High Line, a strip of nature rising above the city streets atop a former railroad viaduct. You’ll learn about the history of the structure, its carefully constructed ecosystem, and some of the surrounding buildings serving as its backdrop.

We’ll dive into the history of the neighborhood as well and see the transition of the Meatpacking District from industrial to trendy.

Your local guide will also introduce you to the historic Chelsea Market, where you’ll have the chance to try food from around the world!

Half-Day Tour

Our half-day option (4-5 hours) gives you more time to enjoy both the High Line and Market, with a chance to include tastings of local cuisine.

Your guide will let you in on the best local spots to try out typical city eats, like New York-style pizza, excellent Asian and Middle Eastern dishes, and desserts so good you’ll want to take home the recipe…or at least more dessert!

Full-Day Tour

Our 6-8–hour option allows you to really soak in all of the history and culture of Chelsea/Meatpacking District. We’ll delve into the full picture of the Meatpacking District’s redevelopment and spend as much time as you’d like getting a better taste of the Chelsea Market, enjoying everything from artisanal bread and baked goods to Mexican- and Japanese-inspired street eats.

We’ll be able to build in more time to further explore the emergence of progressive American art at the Whitney Museum of American Art – a renowned museum containing thousands of works by contemporary American artists, including paintings, drawings, sculptures, video, and photography – and take in picturesque views of the nearby Hudson River. From here, you’re in the perfect place to continue exploring the waterfront and its uniquely designed piers or head back to the High Line towards Chelsea for some shopping and art gallery browsing based on your guide’s recommendations.
